The Resolution
I’m late for my run.
Instead, I’m intentionally procrastinating by cuddling up with my sleeping cat and crafting up a blog post for this week—take that for my honest relationship with New Year’s resolutions.
Unfortunately, I really do love the concept of the “resolution”. I’m a list-maker, a note-taker, a check-next-to-things-I-got-done-today, type-A functioning kind of human. Some days it takes a lot for me to shut off the never-ending to-do list that shouts at me from the back of my mind, and just resolve to slow down. Perhaps this is one of the basic, face-value reasons I love making an annual “New Years resolution” compilation of goals.
Or, more commonly known as, another list of things to do.
It’s healthy to set goals. To remind yourself of the vision and dreams you strive to achieve, by simply writing them down to evaluate their tenacity.
Just the simple act of writing down a goal can put the wheels in motion, consequently changing your path for the next…year.
Nevertheless, I don’t believe resolutions should be reserved for New Year’s Eve, or even the next Monday on your schedule.
Before this starts to melt into another conventional speech on motivation, let me slow down for once.
Life does not equate to a “to-do” list.
If I learned anything this past year, it was to realize that I need to throw out my to-do list and just continue shaping the things that have already been set in motion. To set aside my expectations, and go outside to take a walk. To let go of my stream of goal-making and appreciate the colorful, vibrant life that surrounds me with every waking minute.
If you’ve set a goal for this year, remember to
give
yourself
time.
Don’t rush through what needs to be done just so you can check something off your list of things to do.
“Don't Just Don't just learn, experience. Don't just read, absorb. Don't just change, transform. Don't just relate, advocate. Don't just promise, prove. Don't just criticize, encourage. Don't just think, ponder. Don't just take, give. Don't just see, feel. Don’t just dream, do. Don't just hear, listen. Don't just talk, act. Don't just tell, show. Don't just exist, live.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
